Wirtshäuser [Inns]

A cultural history of Salzburg's inns

Prosit!

The inn has always been a focal point of the social and economic life of a place. Travellers spent the night here, and pedlars offered their wares for sale. On stage-coach routes, messengers could wait here for customers, and larger rooms housed performances given by touring players.
Inns were places for communication, for discussion and argument, for eating, drinking and celebrating, gaming and dancing – and not infrequently they were the source of revolutionary ideas.

Here Gerhard Ammerer and Harald Waitzbauer trace the development of hospitality in Salzburg from the 12th century to the present.

As you read this, take a moment to pour yourself a glass – it doesn't necessarily have to be in an inn...
