The Province of Salzburg

Salzburg characters

Over 500,000 people live in the Town and the Province of Salzburg. Munich photographer Edward Groeger portrays some very special individuals – their faces, their stories, their arts and skills, their (everyday) lives.
Throughout the seasons, he explored town and countryside with his camera, seeking out distinctive personalities; he found mavericks and celebrities, Alpine innkeepers and extreme athletes. They are all given equal importance – craftsmen, jazz and folk musicians, five-star chefs, mountain farmers, country children and folk traditions, schnapps distillers – even the shrewd old Pinzgau character with the official "finest Garibaldi beard in the universe".

All these pictures, together with stories from all generations and settings as told by the Salzburg writer Walter Müller, are full of energy, pride and joie de vivre. Here is life, in all its fascinating "normality", as it is lived today in Salzburg Province.
